Biography

A native New Yorker, Emily Altman has been mediating since 2011. She was a Managing Director and Head of International Government Relations of JPMorgan Chase and, prior to joining JPMorgan, was Head of International Government Relations for Morgan Stanley for almost a decade, negotiating with U.S. regulators, foreign governments and regulators and other global banking institutions on transactions and issues central to the business of the banks and their respective clients.

She began her career as a domestic and international banking and securities lawyer at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City, where she practiced for over a decade. She has also been a Senior Policy Advisor at Fleishman Hillard, the global strategy firm, advising the firm’s clients on U.S. and international financial services reform issues.

She is a cum laude graduate of Harvard College and a graduate of Columbia Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review. She clerked for Judge Jack B. Weinstein, Federal District Judge for the Eastern District of New York.

Altman is President of The Frederick Loewe Foundation, a grant-making organization which also owns and licenses the theatrical and musical properties of the composer who, with lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, wrote such Broadway musicals as My Fair LadyCamelotBrigadoon, Gigi and Paint Your Wagon.

She sits on the Board of Directors of Supporters of Civil Society in Russia, which supports the Moscow School for Civic Education, and is a member of the Theatre Advisory Board of Hunter College. She has been a board member of numerous organizations including the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, the Foundation for Jewish Culture, the Business Council for International Understanding, the American Council on Germany, the US-Russia Business Council and the American Turkish Society.

Altman was Chairman of the International Committee of SIFMA (Securities and Financial Markets Association) for seven years, served on the US Department of Commerce’s International Trade Advisory Committee for Services (ITAC-10), has been a civilian adviser at the US Army War College’s Annual Strategic Crisis Exercises and has chaired various United Nations Private Sector Advisory Groups.

She was Resident Special Adviser to the Minister of Finance of Lithuania in Vilnius shortly after that country’s independence, has lectured on project financing throughout Eastern Europe, and has served as an election observer in Bulgaria and Albania.

Altman is the recipient of the Fulbright Award for Global Business Cooperation and SIFMA’s Distinguished Leadership and Chairman’s Awards.
